Migrant Issue Becomes TMC’s Electoral Weapon for 2026 — Abhishek Attacks BJP and Congress Together from Malda Rally
Malda:
With an eye on the 2026 Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress has made the issue of migrant workers its key campaign plank in both Malda and Murshidabad districts. This was made clear on Tuesday by All India Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
Abhishek addressed a protest rally at Jalangi Maidan in Old Malda against attacks on Bengali-speaking migrant workers in other states. He reached the venue around 1 pm. Several Bengali-speaking migrant workers who were allegedly assaulted in other states were present on the dais. Abhishek interacted with them and listened firsthand to their experiences of harassment. Among them was Amir Sheikh of Kaliachak, who allegedly was “pushed back” and sent to Bangladesh.
From the very beginning of his speech, Abhishek launched sharp attacks on both the BJP and the Congress. He warned the people of Malda and Murshidabad not to be taken lightly. Referring to the “patties incident” at the Brigade rally, he became vocal and directly targeted Humayun Kabir.
Abhishek alleged that Bengali-speaking migrant workers face harassment in other states whenever the BJP and Congress come to power. He also accused Congress leaders of failing to stand by migrant workers during such crises. According to him, Congress continues to lose elections because Trinamool stands with the people.
From the rally, Abhishek promised to create employment opportunities within West Bengal so that no one would be forced to migrate to other states for work. He said, “In Bengal, Trinamool is breaking the BJP, but in other states the opposite is happening.” Challenging the Prime Minister, Abhishek announced that he would hold a counter-rally in February at the same ground where the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a meeting on the 17th.
In his speech, Abhishek also targeted BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari, Sukanta Majumdar and Khagen Murmu, and placed Congress leaders Isha Khan and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in the same line of criticism.
After the rally, Abhishek responded to written complaints submitted by five migrant workers. He then had lunch with the workers before leaving the venue.
