Malda:
Seventy-six years have passed since Independence, yet the people of Bhagabanpur in the Chanchal Assembly constituency of Malda had been deprived of a proper paved road. Elections came and went, promises were made, but nothing materialised. For the residents, daily life meant constant hardship. Due to muddy and uneven roads, fire engines and ambulances could not enter the area, causing severe difficulties for critically ill patients and expectant mothers. Poor connectivity also hindered the growth of trade and business in the region.
At last, this long-standing suffering is set to end with the initiative of Rabiyul Islam, Karmadhyaksha (Agriculture) of the Zilla Parishad. On the eve of the Assembly elections and a day before Abhishek Banerjee’s rally in the district, waves of happiness swept through Bhagabanpur. Under the Pathashree project, nearly ₹3 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of a paved road stretching about five kilometres. On Wednesday, Rabiyul Islam, Zilla Parishad member and Agriculture Karmadhyaksha, laid the foundation stone by cutting the ribbon and breaking a coconut in the presence of local villagers. A large number of residents attended the ceremony.
Rabiyul Islam said, “This road was a long-standing demand of the people of Bhagabanpur. Through Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Pathashree project, that demand is now becoming a reality. A five-kilometre paved road will bring significant improvements in connectivity, healthcare, and economic development.”
Local resident Abdul Mannan said, “For years we had to travel through muddy roads. Ambulances could not enter during emergencies. Despite repeatedly informing public representatives, no work was done. Today, our dream is finally coming true.”
Another resident and former police officer, Mohammad Firoz Ali, said, “Once the five-kilometre road is completed, everyone—from school students to traders—will benefit. We thank the state government and Rabiyul Islam.”
Although political debates have already begun over the road construction, with counter-comments from BJP leaders, the people of Bhagabanpur have only one sentiment—for the first time after a long wait, the path of development has finally opened.
