Discontent over Book Fair Inauguration, Primary Teachers Confront Assistant Inspector of Schools
Malda:
A book fair was inaugurated at the Harishchandrapur High School ground in Malda district, organized by teachers from four circles of Harishchandrapur with the aim of encouraging students to develop an interest in books. However, controversy erupted on the very first day of the inauguration.
Strong resentment grew among primary school teachers over the stage arrangement and selection of guests at the book fair. Assistant Inspector of Schools of Harishchandrapur South Circle and President of the book fair, Tarak Mandal, faced the brunt of this anger as teachers openly expressed their dissatisfaction before him.
According to the primary teachers, no teacher from the primary level was given a place on the inaugural stage. Instead, some high school teachers, acting beyond their jurisdiction, allegedly invited a businessman, his son, and members of self-help groups onto the stage. The primary teachers claimed this had severely undermined their dignity.
The teachers further alleged that the businessman, his son, and self-help group members were made chief guests in exchange for money. Serious questions have been raised regarding the personal decisions and role of the book fair’s secretary and Headmaster of Harishchandrapur High School, Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, in the entire matter.
Mohammad Jasim Uddin, a teacher from the Tulsihata Circle, stated,
“Despite the contribution of primary teachers to the organization of the book fair, we were ignored on the stage. We cannot accept this behavior. That is why we are boycotting the book fair. The Headmaster entertained guests on the stage purely for personal interests.”
Attempts to contact Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, Secretary of the book fair committee and Headmaster of Harishchandrapur High School, over the phone were unsuccessful as he did not respond.
However, Book Fair Committee President and Assistant Inspector of Schools, Tarak Mandal, said,
“I am not responsible for the management. I can only speak on matters related to books. Therefore, I cannot comment on this issue.”
