Malda: brown sugar traffickers from Kaliachak arrested in New Market area; racket operated from Kolkata

Malda:

A thriving brown sugar trafficking racket was being operated from Kolkata. Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid on Mirza Ghalib Street under the New Market Police Station area in Kolkata and arrested six brown sugar traffickers from Kaliachak. Nearly eight kilograms of brown sugar were recovered from their possession. According to the police, the seized narcotics were of very high quality, with an estimated market value of around ₹8 crore.

Police sources said the accused had been trafficking brown sugar from Kaliachak to Kolkata for a long time. On Thursday, the arrested persons were produced before the Malda District Court. Although the police sought custodial interrogation for the purpose of investigation, the court remanded the accused to judicial custody for one day.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Masidul Sheikh, Mohammad Abdullah Sheikh, Ismail Sheikh, Sadik Sheikh, Mobarak Sheikh, and Sadikul Sheikh. Sadikul Sheikh is a resident of the Imamjagir area under Kaliachak Police Station, while the other five are residents of Narayanpur Kismat Tola in the Mozampur area of Kaliachak.

A total of 7.863 kilograms of brown sugar was recovered from the accused. Police stated that due to the superior quality of the seized narcotics, its market value could run into several crores of rupees. Senior district police officials have expressed concern as the “poison” of brown sugar from Kaliachak was being spread in Kolkata.

Police are now investigating whether more people are involved in the case and who else is behind this trafficking network. The arrested persons are being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation.
