PM Modi Mourns President Ebrahim Raisi Death: India Supports Iran
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sorrow over the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who perished in a helicopter crash on Sunday, and affirmed India’s support for Iran during this “time of sorrow”.
“Profoundly saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His efforts in bolstering India-Iran bilateral ties will always be remembered. My deepest condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of grief,” he shared in a post on X.
PM Modi had earlier voiced “deep concern” when the Iranian leader’s helicopter went missing, stating he was praying for the safety of the president and his team, which included Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
On May 13, India signed a 10-year agreement to manage the strategic Iranian port of Chabahar, aiming to enhance trade with Central Asia.
The helicopter, part of a convoy, was transporting President Raisi and other high-ranking officials, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. Contact with the aircraft was lost about 30 minutes after departure, reportedly due to adverse weather conditions while flying over a mountainous region in eastern Azerbaijan province.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar also expressed his condolences for the loss of the two Iranian leaders, recalling his meetings with them. “Deeply shocked to hear of the passing of Iran’s President Dr. Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian in the helicopter crash. Remembering my numerous meetings with them, most recently in January 2024. Our condolences to their families. We stand with the people of Iran during this tragedy,” he stated in a post on X.

The news of President Raisi’s death comes amid heightened regional tensions, particularly due to the Gaza conflict and Iran’s recent confrontations with Israel. President Raisi, who had been in office since 2021, had affirmed Iran’s unwavering support for Palestine, a commitment he reiterated in his recent speech at a dam inauguration.
