Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and other Iranian officials died in a helicopter crash on Tuesday, and as a mark of the day’s national grief, the Indian national flag at Rashtrapati Bhavan was flown at half mast.
A day after the helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi crashed close to Jolfa, a city on the Iranian border with Azerbaijan, some 600 kilometers northwest of Tehran, the country’s capital, Raisi’s body was discovered on Monday. Raisi was returning after a visit to Azerbaijan, according to local media.
President Raisi, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Governor Malek Rahmati of Eastern Azerbaijan region, Imam Mohammad Ali Alehashem, the leader of Tabriz’s Friday prayers, a pilot, a copilot, the crew chief, the head of security, and an additional bodyguard were among the nine persons on board the helicopter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his condolences on the Iranian President’s passing on Monday. “Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said on X, the previous Twitter platform. We will never forget his contribution to the bilateral ties between Iran and India. My sincere sympathies go out to his family and the Iranian people. India is in mourning with Iran at this time.”

S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, expressed his sorrow as well, speaking about his recent encounters with Raisi. “Deeply shocked to learn of the death in a helicopter crash of Iran’s Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian and President Dr. Ebrahim Raisi,” he said. Remember the numerous times I met with them, the last one being in January 2024? We send our sympathies to their families. In this tragic time, we stand with the people of Iran.”
