Shashi Tharoor Urges Amit Shah to Declare Wayanad Landslides a Calamity of Severe Nature
In response to the devastating landslides that have ravaged Wayanad, Kerala, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has penned an urgent letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the central government to declare the event a ‘calamity of severe nature.’ Tharoor’s appeal highlights the extensive damage and the need for immediate and substantial assistance to the affected region.
Wayanad, known for its lush landscapes and rich biodiversity, has been severely impacted by incessant rainfall, leading to multiple landslides that have claimed lives, destroyed homes, and disrupted livelihoods. The disaster has left several areas inaccessible, complicating rescue and relief operations.
In his letter, Tharoor detailed the extent of the destruction, emphasizing the loss of lives and the displacement of numerous families. He pointed out that the current resources available for disaster relief are insufficient to address the scale of the crisis. Tharoor argued that categorizing the landslides as a ‘calamity of severe nature’ would facilitate the allocation of more significant resources and assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
“The people of Wayanad are facing an unprecedented crisis,” Tharoor wrote. “The scale of the landslides and their impact on our communities necessitate immediate intervention and support from the central government. Declaring this a calamity of severe nature will not only expedite relief measures but also ensure that we can rebuild and rehabilitate the affected areas more effectively.”
The Congress MP also called for a coordinated response between the state and central governments to expedite rescue operations and provide adequate relief to those in need. He stressed the importance of long-term measures to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters in the future, including improved infrastructure and better early warning systems.
Tharoor’s appeal has garnered widespread support from local leaders and the affected communities, who hope that the central government will respond promptly to the crisis. The declaration of the landslides as a calamity of severe nature would unlock additional funding and resources, critical for comprehensive relief and rehabilitation efforts.
As Wayanad grapples with the aftermath of the landslides, the urgency for a robust response is clear. The central government’s decision on Tharoor’s request will be pivotal in determining the speed and effectiveness of the relief efforts in this picturesque yet beleaguered region.
